Debswana Diamond Company and Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), 28 May 2025 announced the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement on Renewable Energy Certificates. This strategic partnership will enable Debswana operations to access and demonstrate the use of renewable electricity, sourced from the planned solar plants in the national Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), further advancing Botswana’s commitment to sustainable energy.
Speaking to the importance of the MoA, Debswana Managing Director Andrew Motsomi said, “Debswana ‘s decarbonisation strategy is structured around four key pillars which are: reducing energy intensity; transitioning to alternative fuels; decarbonizing electricity supply; and carbon recovery initiatives.
The Chief Executive Officer of BPC, David Kgoboko said, “This initiative reflects Botswana’s commitment to the global climate agenda and supports the national IRP to build a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
The agreement marks a significant step in Botswana’s green economy efforts as Debswana is a leading diamond producer by value and volume and a major contributor to the national economy of Botswana and BPC is the national power utility responsible for generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity throughout Botswana, playing a central role in supporting the country’s growth by providing reliable electricity and helping to shape a more diverse and sustainable energy future.
