Jwaneng Mine, in collaboration with key stakeholders, recently engaged the Masope community to revive the partnership between the Mine and the community.
Masope, located within the Magagarape Wellfields, is a small settlement with a population of under 300 people, surrounded by farming land. Due to its proximity to the Mine’s wellfields infrastructure, the community is impacted by some of the Mine’s activities, making it crucial to foster a strategic partnership to mitigate negative effects.
During the engagement, departments from Corporate Affairs, Engineering, and Security provided updates on ongoing projects, including the construction of the Jwaneng-Magagarape Road, and discussed the community’s interactions with mine installations. Community members shared their feedback on the impacts of these operations and identified existing controls to address them. Kgosi Ramota of Masope commended the community’s proactive engagement and willingness to collaborate with Jwaneng Mine in managing these impacts.
Corporate Affairs Manager, Ms. Tebogo Gareitsanye, delivered the closing remarks, expressing gratitude for the community’s warm reception. She reiterated Debswana’s commitment to supporting Masope and emphasized ongoing collaboration to manage risks and impacts. The community expressed appreciation for the Mine’s transparency and commitment to keeping them informed about critical activities in their area.
