Debswana’s Group Executive Committee and Heads of Function gathered on 20–21 January 2026 for a Leadership Strategy Retreat focused on strengthening alignment and momentum behind the 2025 – 2029 Corporate Strategy.
Hosted by the Strategy and Corporate Affairs team, the retreat created space for open dialogue and meaningful reflection. Leaders engaged deeply on the strategic direction, key priorities and initiatives that will guide the organisation over the next five years. The session also set a strong foundation for coordinated execution of this ambitious growth strategy.
Reflecting on Leadership for a Changing Environment
In her day day 1 transformational moment, Corporate Affairs Specialist, Neo Melissa Mookodi challenged Leadership to confront the relevance of elements that made the Organisation successful in the past and build towards a possible reset in their approach to leadership in building the future.
CEO Andrew Maatla Motsomi encouraged leaders to introspect on their leadership styles, behaviours and assumptions. He challenged them to consider how effectively they mobilise their teams, enable change and create supportive conditions for successful strategy delivery especially in an operating environment that is becoming more complex and fast‑moving.
Embracing “Cathedral Thinking”
Corporate Affairs Specialist Mogomotsi Cedric Madome in day 2 ,shared a powerful perspective on cathedral thinking—a mindset that urges leaders to think beyond the present moment and beyond their tenure. He highlighted the importance of making decisions today that will positively shape the organisation, its people and its culture for future generations of Debswana employees.
Turning Strategy into Action
Leaders collaborated to workshop the Level 1 (L1) scorecard, translating the strategic priorities into clear focus areas that will cascade into departmental, sectional and individual objectives across the organisation. These will be cascade into departmental, sectional and individual objectives, ensuring alignment and clarity across the organisation as per the recent communication from the CEO’s Office.
A Call for Unity and Momentum
Closing the retreat, COO Koolatotse Koolatotse emphasised the need for unity, urgency and collective ownership as Debswana begins implementing the ambitious 2025 – 2029 Hybrid Transformation Strategy. He encouraged leaders to return to their teams with a “vertical take‑off” mindset—ready to share, embed and drive the strategy forward together.
