Earlier today in Gaborone, Debswana Chief Financial Officer Mr. Ian Modubule resourced the Botswana Sustainability Week and shared insights through a presentation on “Life After Mining: Building Sustainable & Resilient Communities in Botswana’s Mining Towns”. Drawing from Debswana’s beyond diamond mining and economic diversification pathways, Mr. Modubule unpacked how Debswana is being intentional about shaping the future by partnering for thriving communities and impacting livelihoods.
He spoke on the Debswana Rehabilitation Fund and the associated principle of responsible mining which prescribe adherence to stringent environmental standards and best practices throughout mining lifecycle. Mr. Modubule also shared that the Rehabilitation Fund is progressing and on track to close the liability gap.
He cited The Mines and Minerals (Amendment) Act 2024 as an important piece of legislation that will drive national growth through local mineral beneficiation to boost value chains.
The Sustainability Week is held under the theme ‘Enhancing Sustainable Practices in Africa, Change is Here, Leaving No One Behind’.
