Unleashing brilliance: Botswana’s diamond pipeline. Botswana’s journey of growth and prosperity has been driven by diamonds, and the narrative on this site reveals how value is seamlessly woven throughout Botswana’s diamond pipeline.
De Beers works with its Botswana partners to unlock the potential of this precious resource as a key player at every stage of the diamond industry. This captivating value chain not only highlights the significance of Botswana’s role, but also underscores the collaborative efforts that underpin the success of the diamond pipeline.
The diamond value chain comprises processes that progressively add value to the diamond resource, from mining to sales. Value is added as the diamond resource passes through each intervention phase. The intervention phases include Mining, Communication, Concentration, Recovery, Sorting, Sales, and Residue Disposal.
Millions Of Tons Of Rock Are Broken Up Using Drilling And Blasting To Facilitate The Loading And Transportation Of Ore And Waste Rock. Huge Shovels Then Load The Kimberlite And Waste Rock Onto Massive Trucks, Which Are Then Transported To The Primary Crusher And The Waste Dumps.
The Ore Is Broken Down Through Crushing, Scrubbing, And Re-Crushing Processes To Free Diamonds And Reduce
Particle Size. The Word “Comminution” Originates From The Latin Word “Comminutus,” Which Means “To Reduce.”
In Mining Terms, Comminute Means To Reduce To Smaller Particles.
Diamonds are more dense than the host rock. Dense Media Separation (DMS) occurs after the ore has been crushed to a manageable size and mixed with a slurry of ferrosilicon and water. Diamonds, being heavier than the slurry, sink to the bottom. Concentrate containing diamonds (sinks) is sent to the recovery plant, while the floated material (tailings) is transported to the recrush plant for further comminution.
Diamonds can be extracted from the flow of processed concentrate by taking advantage of their remarkable properties. When exposed to x-rays, diamonds emit a fluorescent glow and this triggers a jet of air to separate them from the concentrate. They are also attracted to grease and repel water. Mixing the concentrate and then moving it over a grease belt causes the diamonds to stick to the grease.
Diamond sorting, cleaning, packaging and weighing takes place in a Fully Integrated
Sorthouse (FISH), part of the Aquarium facility. FISH uses laser technology to improve diamond sorting while increasing diamond security.
Finally, the tailings (waste or residue) from concentration, recovery and sorting, are disposed of in mineral residue.
